The decisive difference: music library versus media front end

YMusic is the better conceptual fit for someone who opens an app to listen to music. Its interface and feature set center on songs, audio-only playback, playlists, downloads, tags and local media.

NewPipe’s source repository documents support for YouTube and YouTube Music, PeerTube, Bandcamp, SoundCloud and media.ccc.de, although support depth differs. NewPipe exposes videos, channels, subscriptions, comments, queues and popup playback as well as audio.

That distinction affects daily friction. A music-first listener may find NewPipe’s channel-and-video model broader than necessary. A user who follows creators across media types may find YMusic too specialized.

Background playback and data use

Both apps can continue audio while the screen is off or another app is active. NewPipe explicitly lists background audio that loads only the audio stream, plus popup picture-in-picture mode. YMusic also provides background and audio-only behavior as part of its music workflow.

The word “playlist” covers different objects.

NewPipe can browse remote playlists fetched from a supported service and create local playlists stored only inside NewPipe. It can subscribe to channels locally without logging in. Its import and export documentation supports importing YouTube subscriptions through a Google Takeout export, exporting subscription JSON and backing up the full NewPipe database.

YMusic uses playlists within a music-centered library. It can work with links and locally maintained music state, but a YMusic playlist should not be assumed to import directly into NewPipe. App databases, identifiers and folder records are different.

Before switching:

  1. Record important playlist names and source URLs.
  2. Confirm which tracks exist as ordinary files.
  3. Keep a copy of those files outside app-private storage.

That does not make every request invisible. The selected media service and network provider can still receive network information needed to serve content. Crash reports, external links, DNS, IP address and device configuration are separate privacy considerations. “No Google account” is a precise benefit; “completely anonymous” would be too broad.

YMusic can perform its core public browsing and playback without making an account the center of the experience, but it includes account-related and plugin-assisted paths. A user who wants the smallest service-identity footprint will find NewPipe’s model easier to understand and audit.

Open-source status

NewPipe publishes its source under GPL-3.0. That allows inspection, modification and reproducible community discussion. Its release history also exposes update notes and downloadable artifacts.

Open source is evidence of transparency, not automatic proof that a downloaded APK is genuine or harmless. A repackaged binary can differ from public source. Obtain NewPipe from its named official channels and respect the signing lineage.

NewPipe offers several distribution paths, but they are not interchangeable. The project states that its custom F-Droid repository and GitHub releases share the project signing key. If changing NewPipe source lineages, the documented safe route is to export the database, uninstall, install from the new source and import the backup. Import overwrites the destination database, so verify the file first.

YMusic also depends on a consistent Android package and signing identity for update-in-place. Its workflow is more centralized around its own release route.

Both clients can be interrupted by YouTube changes. NewPipe’s public issue and release trail makes the repair process visible, while YMusic exposes its own update/changelog signals. Neither should be described as permanently unbreakable.
